Track Safety Flags: What To Know When You See Them On The Track

It is imperative, before any track event, that you take time to memorize your track safety flags. During our mandatory morning safety class, these flags will be reviewed. If you are new to GCDE Driving Experience events, please take time to learn the flags below and their meaning.

Green Flag — Rosemount, MN — Gary Curtis Driving Experience

GREEN FLAG (SOLID GREEN)

STARTER FLAG INDICATES THAT THE COURSE IS CLEAR

A session is underway. The starter will watch for traffic and will indicate when you may proceed onto the track. This flag shall normally be in possession of the starter only.

Yellow Flag — Rosemount, MN — Gary Curtis Driving Experience

YELLOW FLAG (SOLID YELLOW)

DANGER, SLOW… DO NOT STOP!

STANDING YELLOW (OR YELLOW STANDING LIGHT) – Take care, danger, slow down, NO PASSING!

WAVING YELLOW (OR BLINKING YELLOW LIGHT) – Increased danger, slow down considerably – NO PASSING!

Blue Flag — Rosemount, MN — Gary Curtis Driving Experience

BLUE FLAG (SOLID BLUE)

FASTER CAR BEHIND YOU

Another car is following you closely or trying to overtake you. Check your mirror.

Surface Condition Flag — Rosemount, MN — Gary Curtis Driving Experience

SURFACE CONDITION FLAG (YELLOW & RED STRIPE)

ROAD CONDITION AHEAD

Take care. Slippery fluids have been spilled, or debris is present on the track surface. NO PASSING!

White Flag — Rosemount, MN — Gary Curtis Driving Experience

WHITE FLAG (SOLID WHITE)

CAUTION, YOU ARE APPROACHING A SITUATION!

Caution – you are approaching a slow-moving car (e.g. with mechanical trouble, ambulance or other emergency vehicles) on the track surface.

Black Flag — Rosemount, MN — Gary Curtis Driving Experience

BLACK FLAG (SOLID BLACK)

WARNING!

BLACK FLAG WARNING – Proceed to pits immediately, but safely! A track marshall or an instructor needs to talk to you.

Checkered Flag — Rosemount, MN — Gary Curtis Driving Experience

CHECKERED FLAG (BLACK AND WHITE CHECKS)

CONTINUE TO PITS. SESSION IS COMPLETE

You have finished the session. Continue cautiously to the pits.  NO PASSING!

Red Flag — Rosemount, MN — Gary Curtis Driving Experience

RED (SOLID RED FLAG OR STEADY RED LIGHT)

EXTREME DANGER – STOP IMMEDIATELY!

Displayed at each station and on the starter's stand – EXTREME DANGER- THE SESSION HAS BEEN STOPPED. Come to an immediate, controlled stop at the edge of the track surface. Remain in the car with a helmet and belts fastened unless your car is on fire. You will soon receive further instructions.
